What Is Speech Pathology?

Speech Pathologists study, diagnose and treat various communication disorders, including difficulties speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and using the voice. They often work with people who have difficulty communicating because of reasons such as: development delays, strokes, brain injuries, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, dementia and hearing loss, as well as other factors that may cause difficulty to one’s speech and language. People who experience difficulties swallowing food and liquids safely can also be helped by a Speech Pathologist.

Speech Pathology is also commonly referred to as 'Speech Therapy'.
